art deco coat rack : completed mosaic project

// September 16th, 2012 // Mosaic projects

This mosaic was made as a gift for my aunt’s 80th birthday, for which a surprise party was organised to bring her family and friends together from various parts of Australia.

The design concept came about when researching 1932, the year of her birth. When I discovered that it was part of the art deco era, I decided this would be a great starting point for a mosaic plaque. After cutting the rolled glass for the central emblem, I then discovered I had several dessert forks with a similar design and so incorporated them into the mosaic as coat hooks.

Hand cut vitreous glass, faux gold leaf, and ceramic on lacquered craftwood coaster.

“1932” art deco mosaic coat rack.

summary of materials used:

  • Vitreous glass tiles – gold, blue, red, dark brown/gold streak, light brown/gold streak
  • Glass nugget
  • Clear rolled glass – hand cut
  • Ceramic letters
  • Ceramic tiles
  • Pique assiette – broken fine china plate
  • Art deco dessert forks

    I can not thank you adequately for the mosaic posts on your web site. I know you’d put a lot of time and effort into them and hope you know how much I appreciate it. I hope I’ll do exactly the same for someone else at some point.
